“Wonderful! That is the only way to describe the five, four-fold station doors manufactured by Door Engineering in our new $7.1 million Fire Station 3,” wrote Fire Chief Nyle Zikmund in a letter to Door Engineering.
When Chief Zikmund presented the station budget to the city council for approval, he was asked to justify the additional expense of his requested Four-Fold door system. “My reply was threefold,” said Zikmund. “They are virtually maintenance free. They do not open part way, which is critical in reducing unintended collision and subsequent damage from fire trucks leaving the station, and, they look really cool!”
After a chuckle, the council approved Chief Zikmund’s budget. “Thankfully, our council has been supportive of investing in high quality, aesthetically pleasing building which fit Door Engineering products to a tee!”
Three years later, Chief Zikmund continues to be pleased with Door Engineering’s Four-Fold door system. “The doors have not only met, but have exceeded all of our expectations. After three years we have spent nothing on maintenance. Your product, attention to quality and customer service is to be commended and we would like to thank you on a job well done.”
“It just makes sense!”
Mark Smith, President of North Star Aviation, repeated the phrase “It just makes sense!” regarding the One-Piece Tip-Up Hangar Doors that Door Engineering and Manufacturing provided over the years at the Mankato Regional Airport.
Smith, a pilot since 1977, was a crop duster, flight instructor and a commercial pilot before he became Chief Pilot for Hubbard in 1985. He insisted on a Tip-Up Door from Door Engineering when they broke ground for the new hangar at the Mankato Regional Airport. In 1992, Smith became President of North Star Aviation, which also housed a One-Piece Tip-Up Door from Door Engineering, installed in 1986.
When the new hangar for Kato Jet International was in the planning and design process, Smith again insisted that the door supplier be Door Engineering. He stated, “Three doors, 14 years and no problems! It just makes sense! The door for North Star Aviation opens on an average of 10 times a day, 365 days a year and we never had to call for service!”
Company History
Door Engineering and Manufacturing, Inc. was founded in 1966 by Otis Olson. Initially specializing in four-fold door systems for industrial and commercial markets, the Minneapolis, MN company soon expanded to aviation and other unique/specialty door industries. In 1979, the organization moved to its current location in Kasota, MN. The already growing product line increased to include fire-rated door systems in 2003 when Door Engineering and Manufacturing, Inc. purchased American Metal Door.
An investment consortium purchased Door Engineering and Manufacturing, Inc. from the Olson family in 2004 and changed the name to Door Engineering and Manufacturing, LLC. Today, with thousands of door systems worldwide and more than 40 years of experience, Door Engineering continues to be an industry leader in industrial, commercial, fire rated, aviation and specialty door solutions.
